No young person today , over the age of 16 is without a bike or a scooter. The bike makers and the scooter makers have flooded the market with bikes of all kinds and makes.
So in most cities you have these two wheelers whizzing in and out of traffic, mostly ignorant of any traffic rules or even if they know them ,bent upon ignoring them. Most of these youngsters do not wear any helmet, for what reason one does not know ,but mostly for aesthetic reasons I suppose.Tell them any number of times that speed thrills but kills ,they are not willing to give an ear, but are willing to become a statistic in the record of accidents.
Open a newspaper in Hyderabad or any city in India and you will be sure to find at least a few deaths due to accidents of two wheelers due to sheer negligence of the driver. Who will teach these youngsters about traffic rules, defensive driving, or wearing of helmets??
Whose responsibility it is?
The police ? Their parents? The companies which they work for?? Or even the manufacturers themselves?
What happened to all the traffics parks we used to go in schools and learn about the traffic rules?
Learning about traffic rules should be made mandatory in all schools & colleges.
There should be a warning sign /message on every product targeted at the youth (men & women )about helmet wearing and safe driving. In fact helmet wearing should made to look like a fashion.Every bike should include a helmet in its price. There should be booklet on safe & defensive driving.
All the Companies like the BPO /software companies should make lessons in safe driving mandatory during induction for freshers. Parking in company premises should only be for riders with helmets.Parking for bikes in cinema theatres should only be for riders with helmets. All movie theatres should display the statistics of death due to rash & negligent driving.
All FM stations should keep relaying messages on the importance of safe driving and wearing of helmets. They should keep running campaigns on safety. Only then the message will keep getting drilled into the young peoples head and probably save their head & lives .
And Oh yes!! why dont the helmet manufacturers come with more light weight models , which also has speakers and mike ? more colourful and have more youth friendly features to make it more appealing ?
To many, on the roads ,these days Yama – The God of death - does not come on a buffalo, he comes on a bike…………..
