The Touch Healer

Yesterday we were at a hospital where this Orthopeadics doctor is a visiting doctor. We were recommended to him by an elderly friend of ours who consulted him and found him to be very effective. He also mentioned that

1. The doctor only sees 5 patients
2. He takes an hour for each patient
3. He comes only after 5.30 pm
4. There is a big rush to see him so appointments have to be fixed much ahead at 7.30 am in the morning.
5. That the doctor is 84 years. old

So there we were, having complied with all the instructions, reaching early and waiting.

The doctor arrived after 5.30pm ,sprightly walking up to his consulting room.Very soon the first patient entered his room.As we were told it took over an hour for the first patient.

We then entered the room, wished him and he bade us to sit down and my wife immediately started relating her pain in the elbow. He looked up smiled and asked her what her name was.She mentioned it, and he duly checked the appointment list he had, and seeing her name in the list, ticked it off, then asked her about her ailment.

He listened patiently, then asked her to sit on the examining bed and examined her elbow, all the while pressing and proding , asking and confirming where the pain was. He then pressed a place in her neck and asked her whether there was a pain sure enough there was a pain which was not there before.

After this he sat down, so my wife asked, for a pain in the elbow why did you press the neck? He said the cause of the pain is not neccessarily in the part where it pains but could be elswhere. We were taught to examine and analise where the origin of pain could be.

He then started writing down in detail covering both sides of an A4 letter head concentrating immensely as if writing for an exam .This went on for almost 45 minutes. At the end of it he expalined the medicines and also recommended exercises which were to be done.

During all this time not a word of an xray or a scan or multitude of tests which most doctors these days get done.

later when we read the Sheet he had given us it had a detailed write up starting from the examination to the prescription and including illustrations of the exercises to be done.

The consultation ended thus after ahour as we were told, but now we knew why.

We realised that he took time to examine , diagonise the problem with his hands his mind running through the causes garnered over 50 years of service and then prescribe the solution. Truly a touch healer.

Airport Sparrows

Airport Sparrows

There was a time when sparrows would chirp on the window sill of my apartment right from the dawn and sometimes even enter the room and quickly fly out. Seeing them always kept one engaged as they went about their job smartly and with an urgency. No longer.

Its been a long time since I have seen any sparrows in the city.

I was pleasantly surprised when i flew out of the new airport outside Hyderabad city the first time. There was this sparrow which was sliding on the polished floor of the airport nearer to where the food stalls were and pecking at the tiny bits of morsels dropped by the customers. At times it would slip and would flutter its wings to gain the balance. It looked as if it had made finding food a game! While this was the only sparrow I saw that day ,There may have been a few others in the other parts of the airport.

Maybe they were there because the airport came outside the city , where the sparrows had moved since they could not survive in the city due to myriad reasons including pollution.

I saw the same in Bangalore city airport when I was there recently. This time there were many of them sitting on a one of the large kiosks of a shopping centre which was facing a restaurent. They quickly swept down to the tables and pecked away at the food which was dropped on the tables, and quickly fly away only to repeat the same pattern again.

This led me to the conclusion that the sparrows had adapted themselves well in the newer airports which were a mini city by themselves, fully temperature controlled and pollution free.
The Sparrows were smart and had adapted themselves.
